The Power of Capacity: A Two-Bucket Lesson

Last semester, my hall faced a water shortage, forcing all residents to rely on a stationed water tank to fetch water. Now, I’m not one for frequent trips up and down the stairs with buckets in hand—call it strategic laziness—so I devised a plan. Each evening, I’d fetch two buckets of water, enough to last me the next day, sparing myself the hassle of multiple trips.
Then, as I carefully rationed my two buckets, a realization hit me— Capacity. 💡
Outside, water was abundant, available in vast quantities, yet within my limited reach, it had become something to manage carefully. Just imagine if I had more than two buckets—enough to last the entire day without worry.

It made me think: We live in an era where everything we need for growth is within reach—knowledge, skills, opportunities—yet so many fail to tap into this wealth. It’s as close to us as the clothes we wear, but without the capacity to contain and utilize it, we struggle like someone rationing two buckets of water despite standing near an overflowing tank.
Capacity encompasses both volume and ability—what we can hold and what we can use. The amount of knowledge, skills, and wisdom we acquire is directly proportional to our value and what we can offer to the world. You can’t give what you don’t have—it simply doesn’t work that way.
Now, imagine a bucket overflowing with water compared to the massive tank it’s sourced from. This is a vivid illustration of the capacity problem among young people today.
With books, social media, AI, and countless resources right under our noses, how are we utilizing them? Do we really have to face rejection at job interviews before we realize our shortcomings?
The solution is simple: Pick up a skill today. Read widely. Broaden your scope of learning. Watch how you scale up from a novice to an expert, transforming scarcity into abundance—not just in knowledge, but in opportunities, growth, and impact.
